The Dry Creek Valley AVA is a long, narrow strip-16 miles long by 2 miles wide-in the northern reaches of Sonoma County. The coastal range allows the valley to heat up during the day and then funnels in cool fog at night. This Zinfandel comes from the northern end of the appellation, where red-hued Manzanita loam offers great drainage. We looked to older, head-trained vines that were able to find and regulate their own sources of water and develop Zinfandel of pitch-perfect balance. We harvested this wine mid-September and aged it for 14 months in 100% French oak barrels (1/3 new). In Dry Creek Valley, 2013 is widely considered to be one of the best Zinfandel vintages in years. The growing season got off to an early start and remained slightly ahead of schedule through the mild summer all the way to harvest, when cool temperatures kicked in and slowed things down a bit. Color and flavor are vibrant and acidity is balanced-quality is exceptionally high.
